Best SEO Chat Tools in 2026: Chatbots vs SEO Data Connectors vs AI SEO Agents

Summarise this post with:

"SEO chat" used to mean a forum. In 2026 it means typing a question like "why did my traffic drop last week?" and getting an answer in plain language. Dozens of products now promise exactly that, from ChatGPT itself to dedicated AI SEO agents.

The problem is that they are not the same kind of tool. Some chatbots have never seen your Search Console data. Some can pull live Ahrefs or Semrush numbers into ChatGPT or Claude. And some are built around your own site, remember your competitors and can turn the answer into work.

So the useful question is not "which SEO chatbot is best?" It is what data does the chat actually have access to, and what can it do with the answer?

I researched the current options by separating them into three types instead of ranking them on features. I checked vendor pricing pages and documentation in September 2026 and used several of these tools while researching this article.

Quick answer: for free SEO help with writing, explanations and schema, a general chatbot such as ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini is enough. If you already pay for an SEO suite, connect it to your chatbot: Semrush MCP, Ahrefs MCP (Lite and above) and Mangools MCP (every plan, from $37.70/month billed annually) bring live keyword and backlink data into the chat. If you want a chat that knows your own site and helps you act on it, use an AI SEO agent such as RankBuddy (from $29/month), ChatSEO (from €29/month) or RankM8 (from €99/month).

TL;DR: the best SEO chat tools by use case

  • Best free SEO chat: ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini
  • Best way to chat with Semrush data: Semrush MCP
  • Best way to chat with Ahrefs data: Ahrefs MCP
  • Cheapest SEO data inside a chatbot: Mangools MCP
  • Best SEO chat built on your own Search Console data: RankBuddy
  • Best chat agent that also publishes to your CMS: ChatSEO
  • Best multi-model SEO chat workspace: RankM8
  • Best for larger teams with AI visibility tracking: SEOTopSecret

If you only need help writing and explaining, do not pay for anything yet. If you need real numbers, the choice is between connecting your existing SEO tool or using an agent that already has your site's data.

What is an SEO chat tool?

An SEO chat tool is any product where you ask SEO questions in natural language and get an answer. In practice, there are three very different types:

Type Examples What data it has What it can do
General chatbots ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini Training data and web search; no SEO metrics Explain, write, generate schema, review pages you paste
Chatbots connected to SEO data Semrush MCP, Ahrefs MCP, Mangools MCP Live keyword, SERP and backlink data from the SEO tool Answer data questions inside ChatGPT, Claude or other assistants
AI SEO agents with chat RankBuddy, ChatSEO, RankM8, SEOTopSecret Your site, Search Console, competitors and third-party data Answer, prioritize and in some cases do the work

The difference matters because SEO answers are only as good as the data behind them. A general chatbot can explain what keyword difficulty is. It cannot tell you your page's real impressions last month, unless something connects it to that data.

If you arrived here looking for how to get your website recommended by chatbots, that is a different topic. I cover it in how to rank in ChatGPT.

Why a plain chatbot is not enough for SEO

General chatbots are genuinely useful for SEO. They write title tags, explain technical issues, draft outlines, turn a messy page into structured headings and generate JSON-LD. For many small tasks, they are all you need.

The limits show up the moment the question depends on data:

  • Search volume and difficulty. Without a connected SEO tool, a chatbot either says it cannot know, or estimates numbers that sound precise but are not measured.
  • Your own performance. It cannot see your Search Console clicks, impressions or positions unless you export and paste them.
  • Competitors. Web search can show a competitor's page, but not its backlinks or the keywords it ranks for.
  • Memory. Most chats start from zero. You re-explain your site, audience and competitors every time.

Google Search Console, the free source of the clicks, impressions and positions Google recorded for your own site

That is why SEO chat has split into two directions: plug SEO data into the chatbot you already use, or use a tool that is built around your site from the start.

SEO chat tools compared at a glance

Tool Type Live SEO data Your Search Console Can act on the answer Price from Best for
ChatGPT / Claude / Gemini General chatbot No (web search only) No Drafts only Free Writing and explaining
Semrush MCP Data connector Yes No No Included in some Semrush plans, with API unit limits Semrush users
Ahrefs MCP Data connector Yes No No Ahrefs Lite, $129/month Ahrefs users
Mangools MCP Data connector Yes No No $37.70/month (annual) Budget keyword data in chat
RankBuddy AI SEO agent Yes Yes Yes $29/month Founders who want work, not just answers
ChatSEO AI SEO agent Yes Yes Yes, including CMS publishing €29/month (€23 annual) Chat plus publishing
RankM8 AI SEO workspace Yes (SERPs and crawls) Not listed Content and plans €99/month Multi-model SEO chat
SEOTopSecret AI SEO platform Yes Yes Briefs, audits, schema $149/month Teams with AI visibility needs

The important columns are Your Search Console and can act on the answer. Data connectors give you better numbers inside the chatbot you already use. Agents give you a chat that already knows your site and can move the work forward.

How I compared these SEO chat tools

I grouped the tools by the data they can reach, because that decides the quality of the answers far more than the chat interface. For each tool, I checked the current pricing page and documentation in September 2026: which data sources it connects, whether it sees your own Search Console data, how usage is metered and whether it can do anything beyond answering.

I also used a data connector while researching this article. I pulled keyword data for several topics through the Semrush MCP inside an AI assistant, and after a handful of reports the connection stopped with a "not enough API units" message. That is not a bug. It is how these connectors are priced, and it is the main thing to understand before relying on one.

I build RankBuddy, which is on this list. I say where it fits and where it does not, and I would not use it to replace a full keyword database.

1. ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini: the free starting point

Best for: Writing, explaining and one-off SEO tasks | Price: Free plans; paid plans add higher limits | What it replaces: Copywriting help, outlines, schema generation, basic page reviews | Main limitation: No SEO metrics or site memory unless you connect them

For most people, a general chatbot is the right first SEO chat tool. Paste a page and ask for better title tags, a clearer H2 structure, FAQ questions, or JSON-LD. Ask it to explain why a page might not be indexed. It is fast and usually good.

There are also custom GPTs built for SEO, such as AI SEO Chat, which walk you through a fixed optimization checklist. They are prompts on top of ChatGPT, not new data sources, and some require a paid ChatGPT plan.

Where general chatbots fail is anything that needs measurement. If an answer contains search volumes, difficulty scores or traffic numbers and you did not provide them, check them in a real SEO tool before acting.

2. Semrush MCP: the best way to chat with Semrush data

Best for: Teams that already pay for Semrush | Price: Included with 50,000 MCP API units per cycle on eligible plans (Semrush One Starter and Pro+, SEO Classic Pro and Guru); larger unit packs for higher tiers | What it replaces: Opening Semrush reports manually | Main limitation: Every request uses API units

Semrush MCP connects Semrush data to ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and coding tools such as Cursor and Claude Code. It is available as an official app in the ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity marketplaces. You can ask for keyword volume and difficulty, organic and paid rankings, competitor overlap and backlink profiles, and the assistant answers with live Semrush numbers.

Semrush plans and pricing on monthly billing: SEO at $139.95, Starter at $199, Pro+ at $299 and Advanced at $549 per month

The catch is metering. Each query consumes API units, and broad requests use more than narrow ones. In my own research, a single 40-row keyword list used far more units than a simple overview, and the allowance ran out quickly. Semrush's own documentation recommends being specific in your questions to save units. Traffic Analytics data also needs a separate plan.

My free Semrush alternative comparison covers Semrush pricing and cheaper options.

3. Ahrefs MCP: the best way to chat with Ahrefs data

Best for: Ahrefs users who want backlink and keyword data in ChatGPT or Claude | Price: Included on Lite ($129/month) and above | What it replaces: Opening Site Explorer and Keywords Explorer for routine questions | Main limitation: API unit limits and 100 rows per request on Lite

Ahrefs MCP brings keyword metrics, traffic potential, keyword difficulty, competitor traffic trends and backlink data into ChatGPT, Claude, Cursor and Copilot Studio. Ahrefs lists it on Lite, Standard, Advanced and Enterprise, with 200,000 API units a month on Lite, 800,000 on Standard and 2 million on Advanced.

Ahrefs Site Explorer is sold on studying any website, which is exactly the part the free account keeps for paid plans

For backlink questions, this is the strongest data you can get into a chat. It is not available on Ahrefs Free or the $29 Starter plan, so the real entry price is Lite. My free Ahrefs alternative guide covers what you get at each level.

4. Mangools MCP: the cheapest SEO data inside a chatbot

Best for: Solo founders and bloggers who want keyword data in their AI assistant on a budget | Price: Every plan; Basic $61/month or $37.70/month billed annually | What it replaces: Opening KWFinder and SERPChecker for routine questions | Main limitation: Smaller datasets and daily lookup limits

Mangools now includes API and MCP access on every paid plan, which makes it the cheapest way I found to get real keyword, SERP, rank tracking and backlink data into a chat. Mangools also has a free account, but with only 5 lookups a day it is a demo rather than a working setup.

KWFinder by Mangools: a keyword search for long tail keywords with low SEO difficulty

The trade-off is depth: smaller datasets than Ahrefs or Semrush and no site audit. I compared it in detail in my Mangools alternative guide.

5. RankBuddy: SEO chat built on your own site and Search Console

Best for: Founders and small teams who want answers that turn into prioritized work | Price: 5 free runs, then Starter $29/month, Pro $49/month, Scale $79/month | What it replaces: Manual Search Console analysis, keyword prioritization, audits and content planning | Main limitation: Not a large raw keyword database and no public API

RankBuddy is my own product, so the boundary matters. If you want to query a huge keyword database from ChatGPT, a data connector such as Ahrefs or Semrush MCP is the better fit.

RankBuddy works the other way round. It starts from your website, connects to Google Search Console, stores your competitors and remembers them between conversations. You can chat with it like an SEO employee or give it recurring tasks.

RankBuddy homepage: an AI SEO employee that starts from your website address, free to start with no credit card

When I ask it to compare my Domain Rating with my competitors, it pulls the data and summarizes where I stand:

RankBuddy chat comparing the Ahrefs Domain Rating of rankbuddy.io with four stored competitors in one table

The same chat can run a technical audit, research keywords against the pages you already have and build an SEO strategy that puts the next steps in order. The point is not a better answer to one question. It is that the answer ends in a task you can act on this week.

6. ChatSEO: SEO chat agent with CMS publishing

Best for: Site owners who want a chat agent that can also publish changes | Price: Starter €29/month (€23/month billed annually) with 100 credits, Pro €49/month, Ranker €79/month; free trial with 30 credits | What it replaces: Audits, content writing and on-page fixes | Main limitation: Credit-based: one credit equals one message

ChatSEO describes itself as an AI SEO agent you talk to. It connects Google Search Console, Google Analytics and CMS platforms such as WordPress, Shopify and Webflow, uses DataForSEO for rankings, and can apply changes such as rewriting a title and H1 directly in your CMS after you approve them.

The pricing model is worth reading closely. On Starter, 100 credits means about 100 messages a month, so long back-and-forth conversations use the allowance faster than you might expect.

7. RankM8: multi-model SEO chat workspace

Best for: Marketers who want one SEO chat with several AI models and their site preloaded | Price: From €99/month with 500 credits; 7-day free trial | What it replaces: Separate chats for strategy, keywords, content and competitor research | Main limitation: Higher starting price, and requests use 1–5 credits each

RankM8 crawls your sitemap and competitors, pulls live SERP data and loads it into a chat that can use Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, DeepSeek or Grok. The benefit is context: you do not re-explain your site in every conversation.

It is focused on research and content rather than first-party performance data, and I did not find a Search Console integration listed on its chat feature page.

8. SEOTopSecret: AI SEO chat for teams

Best for: Teams and agencies that also need AI visibility tracking | Price: Lite $149/month, Starter $249/month, Pro $499/month; 7-day trial | What it replaces: Briefs, audits, schema and AI visibility monitoring | Main limitation: Expensive for a single small site

SEOTopSecret's AI SEO Chat is described as a senior SEO consultant inside your workspace. It uses your sitemap, tracked keywords, competitors and audit history, and says it cites sources such as SERPs, Search Console and CrUX data rather than inventing metrics. The platform also tracks brand mentions across AI engines.

It is a serious option for teams, but at $149/month and up it is priced well above tools aimed at founders.

Other SEO chat options worth knowing

  • Serpstat MCP — included from the Team plan ($100/month billed annually) and works with ChatGPT and Claude. See my Serpstat alternative comparison.
  • SE Ranking MCP — included on Core ($129/month) with 25,000 API credits.
  • Keywords Everywhere — sells credits for keyword metrics and also offers an MCP server.
  • Custom SEO GPTs — free or cheap prompt packs inside ChatGPT. Useful for checklists, but they do not add new data.
  • Google Analytics MCP — an official, experimental server from Google Analytics that gives Gemini CLI, Gemini Code Assist and Claude Code read-only access to GA4 reports. It needs a local setup with a Google Cloud project, so it suits technical users.

Which SEO chat tool fits which job?

Job Tool I would use
Write titles, outlines, FAQs and schema ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini
Ask keyword and backlink questions with real numbers Semrush MCP or Ahrefs MCP
Get keyword data into a chat on a small budget Mangools MCP
Understand my own Search Console data and decide what to do next RankBuddy
Chat and publish on-page changes to the CMS ChatSEO
Use several AI models on one SEO workspace RankM8
Team workflows plus AI visibility tracking SEOTopSecret

Prompts that work well in SEO chat tools

Whatever tool you use, specific prompts get better answers and, with metered tools, use fewer credits or units:

  1. "Show the queries where my site had the most impressions but a CTR under 2% in the last 28 days, and suggest a better title for each page."
  2. "Which of my pages lost the most clicks compared with the previous period, and what changed in their average position?"
  3. "Compare the top 10 results for [keyword]. How many referring domains does each have, and which one is the weakest?"
  4. "Find long-tail question keywords about [topic] with keyword difficulty under 20."
  5. "Group these 40 keywords by search intent and tell me which ones belong on the same page."
  6. "Write a content brief for [keyword] that covers what the top five pages include and what they miss."

The first two need your own Search Console data. The next two need an SEO data source. The last two work in any chatbot if you paste the data in. My guide to GSC clicks vs impressions explains how to read the first kind of answer, and how to write a content brief covers the last.

Credits and API units: the hidden cost of SEO chat

Almost every SEO chat tool with real data is metered, and the meters work differently:

  • Semrush MCP counts API units per request; 50,000 units per cycle on eligible plans.
  • Ahrefs MCP counts API units per request; 200,000 a month on Lite.
  • ChatSEO counts one credit per message; 100 a month on Starter.
  • RankM8 uses 1–5 credits per request; 500 a month on the starting plan.

Chat encourages follow-up questions, and follow-up questions spend credits. Before choosing a tool, estimate how many questions you actually ask in a week, and prefer narrow questions over "tell me everything about this domain."

When a plain chatbot is enough

I would not pay for an SEO chat tool if my work is mostly writing: titles, meta descriptions, outlines, FAQs and schema. A general chatbot does that well, and I can paste in any data it needs.

I would connect an SEO data source when I regularly need keyword or backlink numbers in the conversation. I would use an agent built on my own site when the hard part is not getting answers but deciding what to do with them every week.

For a broader look at the category, see my article on the AI agent for SEO and how agents differ from traditional tools.

My verdict

For free SEO help with writing and explanations, I would use ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini. To chat with real keyword and backlink data, I would connect Semrush MCP or Ahrefs MCP if I already paid for those tools, and Mangools MCP if I wanted the cheapest option. For chat plus CMS publishing, ChatSEO; for a multi-model workspace, RankM8; for team workflows with AI visibility tracking, SEOTopSecret.

If my problem was not getting answers but turning them into progress on my own site, I would use RankBuddy. Not because it has a bigger database than Ahrefs or Semrush — it does not — but because the chat starts from my Search Console data and my competitors, and ends in the next task: which page to update, which issue to fix, or which keyword to leave alone because the SERP is unrealistic for my site.

That is the difference between SEO chat and SEO execution.

Frequently asked questions

What is an SEO chat tool?

An SEO chat tool lets you ask SEO questions in natural language and get answers. There are three types: general chatbots such as ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini; chatbots connected to SEO data through MCP, such as Semrush MCP, Ahrefs MCP and Mangools MCP; and AI SEO agents such as RankBuddy, ChatSEO and RankM8 that work from your own site and Search Console data.

Can ChatGPT do SEO?

ChatGPT is good at SEO writing tasks such as titles, meta descriptions, outlines, FAQs and schema. On its own it does not have search volume, keyword difficulty, backlink or Search Console data, so any numbers it gives without a connected SEO tool should be checked before you act on them.

What is the best free SEO chat tool?

ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini all have free plans that handle SEO writing and explanations well. For real keyword data you need a connected SEO tool, and for your own performance data you need Google Search Console, which is free.

How do I get Ahrefs or Semrush data into ChatGPT or Claude?

Both offer an official MCP server. Semrush MCP is included with 50,000 API units per cycle on eligible plans and works with ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity. Ahrefs MCP is included on Lite ($129/month) and above, with 200,000 API units a month on Lite, and works with ChatGPT, Claude, Cursor and Copilot Studio.

What is the cheapest way to use SEO data in an AI chat?

Mangools includes API and MCP access on every paid plan, from $37.70/month billed annually, which makes it the cheapest of the major SEO tools for keyword, SERP and backlink data inside an AI assistant.

Do SEO chat tools use credits?

Most tools with real data are metered. Semrush MCP and Ahrefs MCP count API units per request, ChatSEO counts one credit per message (100 a month on Starter), and RankM8 uses 1 to 5 credits per request (500 a month on its starting plan). Specific questions use fewer credits than broad ones.

What is the difference between an SEO chatbot and an AI SEO agent?

An SEO chatbot answers questions. An AI SEO agent also knows your site, remembers your competitors and turns answers into work, such as prioritized tasks, audits, content briefs or published changes.

Is RankBuddy an SEO chat tool?

Yes. RankBuddy is an AI SEO agent you can chat with or assign recurring tasks to. It connects to Google Search Console, stores your competitors and turns findings into prioritized work. It starts with 5 free runs, then $29/month. It is not a large raw keyword database and has no public API.
