Ahrefs and SpyFu both let you type in a competitor's domain and see what it ranks for. That is where the similarity ends. Ahrefs started as a backlink crawler and grew into a full SEO platform. SpyFu started by tracking which keywords competitors buy on Google Ads and how their ads change over time.
That history still shapes both products. Ahrefs is stronger for backlinks, organic research and international data. SpyFu is stronger for paid search history and is cheaper for unlimited competitor data.
So the useful question is not "which tool is better?" It is are you mainly researching organic search, paid search, or both, and in which countries?
I compared both using their current pricing pages and documentation in September 2026, looking at the jobs people buy them for: competitor research, paid search intelligence, keyword research, backlinks, audits and tracking.
Quick answer: choose SpyFu if competitor PPC research matters to you or you want unlimited competitor data on a budget: Basic costs $39/month, Pro + AI is $59 for the first month and then $119/month, and SpyFu keeps 10+ years of history on every plan. Choose Ahrefs if your work is mainly organic SEO, link building or markets outside SpyFu's 32 countries: Starter costs $29/month with 200 credits, and the full workflow starts at Lite for $129/month. If you are deciding what to work on for your own site, start with Google Search Console, which neither tool replaces.
TL;DR: Ahrefs vs SpyFu in 2026
- Best for PPC competitor research: SpyFu, with 18+ years of Google Ads history, ad tests and keyword buying patterns
- Best for backlinks: Ahrefs, by a wide margin
- Best for organic keyword research: Ahrefs, with 28.7 billion keywords across 217 locations
- Country coverage: Ahrefs covers 217 locations; SpyFu collects data in 32 countries
- Historical data: SpyFu includes 10+ years on every plan; Ahrefs Lite includes 6 months

If you run Google Ads or sell to advertisers, SpyFu earns its place. If you build links, work internationally or care mostly about organic search, choose Ahrefs.

|---|---|---|
| Basic | $39/month | 10,000-row search results and exports, 5,000 weekly tracked keywords, 1 site project, site audit up to 50,000 pages a month, 1 user |

Ahrefs pricing
| Plan | Price | Key limits |

| Ahrefs Free | $0 | Site Explorer and Site Audit for verified sites |
| Starter | $29/month | Keywords Explorer, Site Explorer, Rank Tracker and Site Audit with 200 credits a month |

| Advanced | $449/month | 75,000 rows per report, 5 years of history |
What you get for the money
At the entry level, SpyFu gives far more raw competitor data per dollar: 10,000-row reports and 10+ years of history for $39, compared with 2,500 rows and 6 months of history on Ahrefs Lite at $129. For unlimited results, SpyFu Pro + AI costs $119/month, while Ahrefs needs Standard at $249/month.
What Ahrefs charges for is depth and coverage: a far larger backlink index, more keywords, more countries and a more mature site audit. Whether that is worth more depends entirely on what you research.
Paid search research: where SpyFu wins
SpyFu's original job was showing what competitors do on Google Ads, and it is still the best reason to buy it.
- Ad history. SpyFu says it keeps 18+ years of historical data. You can see which keywords a competitor has bought over time, how their ad copy changed and which ad tests they ran.
- Kombat. Compares you with your top competitors and shows the core keywords they buy that you do not.
- Google Ads Advisor and pre-built campaigns. Suggests keywords based on what competitors have bid on for a long time, which is a reasonable signal that those keywords are profitable.
Ahrefs also has paid search data. Site Explorer includes Paid keywords, Paid pages and an Ad position history chart, with ad copy, estimated CPC and paid traffic. But Ahrefs' own help documentation notes that paid data depends on how often ads appear in the search results it collects: if the results it receives do not contain ads, it cannot capture them.
For occasional PPC checks, Ahrefs is enough. If you manage Google Ads budgets or audit competitors' paid strategy regularly, SpyFu is the specialist tool. I compared SpyFu with other PPC and SEO tools in my SpyFu alternative guide.
Organic keyword research and country coverage
For organic SEO, Ahrefs has the larger dataset.
- Ahrefs says Keywords Explorer has 28.7 billion keywords across 217 locations, with keyword difficulty, traffic potential, parent topic and clustering.
- SpyFu says it has 13.1 billion keywords with advanced metrics, and its help center lists 32 countries where it collects Google data, including the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Germany, France, India and Brazil.
If your market is outside those 32 countries, SpyFu is not a real option. If it is the US or another covered market, SpyFu's organic data is useful, especially for seeing which pages and keywords a competitor gained or lost over many years.
Both tools show keyword difficulty, but calculated differently. Ahrefs bases KD on referring domains to the top-ranking pages. Compare tools with care, and read Domain Rating vs Domain Authority before mixing authority metrics from different vendors.
No third-party tool shows exact traffic. In one analysis of 1,635 websites, even Ahrefs and Semrush organic traffic estimates deviated from Search Console by a median of roughly 50–70%.
Backlinks: where Ahrefs wins
Backlinks are Ahrefs' core strength. Site Explorer shows referring domains, anchors, new and lost links, link history, link intersect and broken backlinks, all built on one of the largest link indexes available.
SpyFu has a backlink tool, but it is designed more for finding link opportunities from pages that rank than for full backlink analysis. If link building or link audits are part of your job, SpyFu will not replace Ahrefs. My free Ahrefs alternative guide covers cheaper backlink options.
Site audit and rank tracking
Both tools now include both, but at different levels.
- Site audit. Ahrefs Site Audit is mature, with 100,000 crawl credits a month on Lite and up to 25,000 pages per project. SpyFu added a site audit with 50,000 crawl pages a month on Basic and AI-suggested fixes. Ahrefs is still the stronger choice for technical SEO.
- Rank tracking. SpyFu includes 5,000 weekly tracked keywords on Basic and 15,000 on Pro + AI. Ahrefs Lite tracks 750 keywords, also weekly. For tracking many keywords cheaply, SpyFu gives more.
For your own site, Google Search Console shows the queries that actually produced impressions and clicks. I explain why that is different from a tracked keyword list in rank tracking vs SEO monitoring.
AI features and integrations
- SpyFu includes a ChatGPT integration on every plan, a Google Search Console integration, AI brand monitoring and RivalFlow, an AI tool for optimizing pages, from Pro + AI. API access starts on Pro + AI.
- Ahrefs includes its MCP server and API from Lite, with 200,000 API units a month on Lite, so you can query Ahrefs data from ChatGPT, Claude and other assistants.
I compare these and other ways to use SEO data inside a chat in my guide to the best SEO chat tools.
How I compared Ahrefs and SpyFu
I reviewed both pricing pages, plan limits and documentation in September 2026, including Ahrefs' paid search documentation and SpyFu's list of supported countries. I compared them on competitor research, paid search history, organic keyword data, country coverage, backlinks, audits, tracking and limits.
I did not run my own accuracy benchmark, so I do not claim one tool's estimates are more accurate than the other's. The numbers in this article come from each vendor's own pages on the date I checked them.
I build RankBuddy, which I mention at the end. It is not a replacement for either database.
Which one should you choose?
| Your situation | Choose |
|---|---|
| You run or manage Google Ads campaigns | SpyFu |
| You want unlimited competitor data on a budget | SpyFu Pro + AI |
| You build links or audit backlink profiles | Ahrefs |
| Your market is outside SpyFu's 32 countries | Ahrefs |
| You need many years of competitor history cheaply | SpyFu |
| Technical SEO audits are a regular job | Ahrefs |
| Agency selling both SEO and PPC | Both, or SpyFu plus a backlink tool |
| You only research occasionally | Ahrefs Starter or SpyFu Basic |
When neither is the answer
Both tools are built to show what competitors do. Neither tells you which page on your own site to fix first, which keyword you already almost rank for, or whether a new page would compete with one you already have.
For an existing site, that answer usually starts in Google Search Console. That is the gap I built RankBuddy for: it reads your Search Console data, stores your competitors and turns competitor analysis and keyword research into prioritized work for your own site.
It is not a replacement for SpyFu's ad history or Ahrefs' backlink index. It is the step that turns their research into a plan.
If you are looking beyond these two tools, see my SpyFu alternative, free Semrush alternative and Ahrefs vs KWFinder comparisons.
My verdict
SpyFu is the better tool for paid search and budget competitor research. It offers 18+ years of ad history, unlimited competitor data from $119/month and 10+ years of history even on the $39 Basic plan.
Ahrefs is the better tool for organic SEO. It has a much larger keyword database, 217 locations, one of the strongest backlink indexes and a mature site audit. If you build links or work outside SpyFu's 32 countries, Ahrefs is the clear choice.
My rule of thumb: if your question is "what are my competitors paying for on Google?", choose SpyFu. If your question is "why do my competitors rank organically and who links to them?", choose Ahrefs. And if your question is "what should my site work on next?", start with your own Search Console data.
That is the difference between competitor research and SEO execution.
