SpyFu is unusual among SEO tools because its strongest feature is not technical auditing, content optimization or backlinks. It is competitor search intelligence, especially historical Google Ads data.

You can enter a competitor and see which keywords they rank for, which keywords they advertise on, estimated clicks and ad spend, competing domains, ranking history and past ad copy going back more than 10 years. That is difficult to reproduce with a normal SEO toolkit.

That is why finding a good SpyFu alternative starts with one question: **what part of SpyFu are you actually trying to replace?**

If you need deep PPC competitor history, your shortlist looks very different from someone who only uses SpyFu for organic keywords. If you want technical SEO, backlinks or content planning, there are stronger options. And if your real problem is turning competitor research into consistent SEO work, another competitor dashboard may not solve it at all.

I researched the current alternatives by separating those jobs instead of comparing feature counts. I checked vendor pricing pages and documentation in September 2026, reviewed the free access available today, and compared where each tool fits without pretending they all replace SpyFu's paid-search history.

**Quick answer:** there is no single tool that replaces all of SpyFu. For SEO and PPC in one platform, use **Semrush** (SEO Toolkit from $139.95/month, Advertising Toolkit from $99/month billed annually). For organic competitors and backlinks, use **Ahrefs** (from $29/month). To see competitors' Google ads for free, use **Google Ads Transparency Center**. To turn competitor SEO data into prioritized work, use **RankBuddy** (from $29/month). And if historical Google Ads research is your main job, **keep SpyFu** ($39/month): it is still the cheapest way to get it.

## TL;DR: the best SpyFu alternatives by use case

* **Best free starting point:** Google Search Console + Google Ads Keyword Planner
* **Best broad SEO + PPC alternative:** Semrush
* **Best for organic competitors and backlinks:** Ahrefs
* **Best free way to see competitors' ads:** Google Ads Transparency Center
* **Best if competitor research needs to become SEO work:** RankBuddy
* **Best for agencies and rank tracking:** SE Ranking
* **Best lower-cost all-in-one SEO suite:** Serpstat
* **Best for total competitor traffic and channels:** Similarweb
* **Best budget SEO option:** Ubersuggest

If PPC spying is the main reason you use SpyFu, be careful about replacing it with Ahrefs, RankBuddy or Ubersuggest just because they also have competitor features. Those tools answer different questions.

If I mainly cared about **organic SEO**, I would compare Ahrefs and Semrush. If I wanted **overall market and traffic intelligence**, I would look at Similarweb. If I already had enough competitor data but needed to decide what to do with it, that is where RankBuddy fits.

## How much does SpyFu cost in 2026?

SpyFu's current plans, taken from its pricing page in September 2026:

| Plan | Monthly billing | Annual billing (25% off) | What you get |
| ----------- | -------------------------------- | ------------------------ | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Basic | $39/month | about $29/month | 10k-row results and exports, 5k weekly tracked keywords, 10+ years of history, Site Audit |
| Pro + AI | $59 first month, then $119/month | 25% off | Unlimited results and exports, 15k tracked keywords, API credits, larger Site Audit |
| Team/Agency | $249/month | 25% off | Unlimited data, 50k tracked keywords, 5 users, daily audits |

Every plan comes with a 30-day money-back guarantee, and SpyFu says its index covers more than 7.2 trillion search results across 152 million domains.

That pricing matters. SpyFu's entry plan is already cheaper than Ahrefs Lite or Semrush, so you should not switch just because another product calls itself a "cheaper SEO tool." If PPC competitor intelligence is the job, $39 a month is hard to beat.

The reason to change is usually that **the job changed**.

***

## Is there a free version of SpyFu?

Partly. SpyFu does not force you into a trial before you can look at anything: you can search a competitor's domain or a keyword and see an overview of organic keywords, paid keywords, estimated clicks, estimated ad budget, competitors and ads. Free results are truncated, and full keyword lists, exports and rank tracking require a paid plan.

![SpyFu homepage showing an SEO overview for a competitor domain with organic keywords, rank changes and inbound links](https://rankbuddy.io/i/84fa5417-6c93-4633-84dc-b551d3d31293)

That makes SpyFu itself one of the first free SpyFu alternatives I would try. If you only need occasional competitor checks, you may not need to replace it at all. The free access becomes restrictive once you want larger keyword lists, exports, historical research or repeated analysis across many competitors.

## The best free SpyFu alternatives

Most people searching for a **free SpyFu alternative** want to keep some competitor visibility without a subscription. No free tool replaces SpyFu's keyword and ad history, but a combination of free tools covers a surprising amount:

| Free tool | What you get for free | What it does not replace |
| ------------------------------ | ------------------------------------------------------------- | --------------------------------------- |
| SpyFu free searches | Truncated competitor overview, organic and paid keywords | Full lists, exports, history, tracking |
| Google Search Console | Real queries, clicks, impressions and positions for your site | Any competitor data |
| Google Ads Keyword Planner | Keyword ideas, search-volume ranges, bid estimates | Which keywords competitors buy |
| Google Ads Transparency Center | The ads any advertiser runs on Search, YouTube and Display | Keywords, spend estimates, long history |
| Meta Ad Library | Active Facebook and Instagram ads for any page | Google search data |
| Ahrefs Free | Backlinks and site audit for sites you verify | Competitor research |
| Similarweb free tools | A traffic snapshot for any domain | Keyword-level and ad-level detail |
| RankBuddy | 5 free runs of competitor analysis, audits or content work | PPC and ad history |

I show how I would combine them in the [$0 stack](#how-i-would-replace-spyfu-for-0) further down.

***

## A note on iSpionage

Many SpyFu alternative lists still recommend iSpionage as the closest like-for-like PPC tool. **iSpionage shut down in July 2025.** Its site now redirects to TapClicks, which says the iSpionage tools are no longer available.

If an article recommends it, the article is out of date. For paid-search competitor research in 2026, the realistic options are SpyFu itself, Semrush's Advertising Toolkit, or free ad libraries such as Google Ads Transparency Center.

The column that matters most is PPC. Several products here are excellent SEO platforms, but that does not make them replacements for SpyFu's paid-search history.

## What are you actually trying to replace from SpyFu?

This is the part I would figure out before paying for another subscription.

### Competitor PPC research

This is SpyFu's clearest strength: the paid keywords a competitor targets, estimated ad spend, competing advertisers, keyword overlap and historical ad copy.

If this is 80% of what you use SpyFu for, I would not replace it with an organic-first product. Semrush's Advertising Toolkit is the broader upgrade. Google Ads Transparency Center shows competitors' ads for free, and Keyword Planner covers keyword and CPC research, but neither reconstructs which keywords a competitor bought over time.

### Organic competitor keywords

SpyFu also shows competitor organic rankings, keyword gains and losses, ranking history and estimated clicks. This part is much easier to replace: Semrush, Ahrefs, SE Ranking, Serpstat and Ubersuggest all cover it. If organic search is the real job, prioritize the quality of keyword, SERP, backlink and page data over a tool that also happens to have PPC reports.

### Keyword research

SpyFu finds keywords through both organic and paid competitor data, and that is genuinely useful: a keyword a company keeps paying for is a strong commercial signal. But for normal SEO keyword research, Ahrefs and Semrush go deeper, Serpstat is a lower-cost suite and Ubersuggest is simpler for small sites.

RankBuddy's [keyword research](https://rankbuddy.io/features/keyword-research) takes a different approach: instead of returning a bigger keyword table, it groups keywords by search intent and maps them against the pages your site already has.

### Competitor identification

One thing I like about SpyFu is that it separates the competitors you know from the competitors Google reveals. SEO competitors come from overlapping organic keywords, PPC competitors from overlapping paid keywords.

That matters. Your biggest commercial rival may barely invest in SEO, while an unrelated publisher competes with you on hundreds of important searches. For SEO planning, I care most about the domains that keep appearing beside my site in Google. RankBuddy's [competitor analysis](https://rankbuddy.io/features/competitor-analysis) works the same way: it finds competitors from live search results rather than only the brands you enter during onboarding.

### Rank tracking

SpyFu's paid plans include weekly tracked rankings. If rank tracking is central to your workflow, SE Ranking is the stronger dedicated option because tracking, reporting and multi-project work are the core of the product.

For your own site, Google Search Console shows which queries actually produced impressions and clicks, which is a different question from tracking a fixed keyword list. I explain the difference in [rank tracking vs SEO monitoring](https://rankbuddy.io/blog/rank-tracking-vs-seo-monitoring).

### Backlinks

SpyFu includes backlink searches, but backlinks are not the reason to choose it. For serious competitor backlink analysis I would use Ahrefs, which has much deeper referring-domain, anchor, link-gap and history workflows. My [free Ahrefs alternative](https://rankbuddy.io/blog/free-ahrefs-alternative) guide covers the free and paid options, and [Domain Rating vs Domain Authority](https://rankbuddy.io/blog/domain-rating-vs-domain-authority) explains how to read the authority scores these tools show.

### Technical SEO

SpyFu added a Site Audit to every plan (50,000 crawled pages a month on Basic), so it is no longer purely a research tool. But if technical SEO is a major job for you, Ahrefs, Semrush, SE Ranking, Serpstat or Screaming Frog have more mature audit workflows.

### Total competitor traffic

SpyFu is search intelligence. It does not show whether a competitor depends on organic search, paid ads, direct traffic, referrals or social. For that cross-channel view you need a traffic-intelligence platform. I explain the difference in my [Similarweb alternative](https://rankbuddy.io/blog/similarweb-alternative) comparison.

### Turning competitor research into execution

This is the gap that matters most to me. Suppose SpyFu shows that a competitor ranks for 3,000 keywords I do not. That is interesting, but I still need to figure out:

* Which of those keywords actually fit my business?
* Which ones share the same search intent?
* Do I already have a page that should target them?
* Can my site's authority realistically compete?
* Should I update an existing page or create a new one?
* Which opportunity should happen first?

That is where competitor research stops being a data problem and becomes an execution problem. My [content gap analysis guide](https://rankbuddy.io/blog/content-gap-analysis-guide) walks through that step in detail.

***

## Why people look for a SpyFu alternative

SpyFu is inexpensive and good at competitor intelligence, so I would not invent reasons to leave it. The reasons that make sense are specific:

* **You no longer need PPC data.** If your marketing is almost entirely organic, much of SpyFu's advantage disappears, and Ahrefs, SE Ranking or Serpstat may give you more value.
* **You want one broader platform.** If you also need deep audits, backlinks, content optimization, AI visibility and reporting, Semrush or SE Ranking spread the subscription across more jobs.
* **You mainly need backlinks.** Move toward Ahrefs rather than asking SpyFu to become a backlink platform.
* **You need total market intelligence.** Search visibility is not total business visibility. Similarweb is built for that wider question.
* **The Pro price jump.** Basic is $39, but unlimited results and exports on Pro + AI cost $119/month after the first month. If you only outgrew Basic's 10k-row limits, compare that price with the suites below.
* **You have enough research but not enough execution.** A research platform can uncover 300 opportunities in one afternoon. That is useful until you have a 300-item backlog and no idea which three things deserve attention this week. For a professional SEO, interpreting that list is the job. For a founder, it becomes another dashboard to avoid.

## How I compared these SpyFu alternatives

I did not treat every product here as a complete SpyFu replacement, because most are not. I reviewed current pricing and documentation in September 2026 and split the workflow into PPC intelligence, organic competitor research, keyword research, backlinks, technical SEO, first-party data, traffic intelligence and execution.

Where a vendor publishes limits or prices, I use those numbers rather than older comparison articles. That is also how I caught that iSpionage, still recommended in many lists, no longer exists.

I did not run my own accuracy benchmark, so I do not claim one vendor's estimates are more accurate than another's. Competitor clicks, traffic and ad spend are all estimates built from different datasets. In one [analysis of 1,635 websites](https://www.tryanalyze.ai/blog/traffic-estimations-accuracy), even Ahrefs and Semrush organic traffic estimates deviated from Search Console by a median of roughly 50–70%. Use these numbers to compare competitors with each other and to spot trends, not as exact figures.

I build RankBuddy, which is on this list. I say where it fits and where it does not, and I would not use it to replace SpyFu's PPC data.

***

## 1. Google Search Console + Google Ads Keyword Planner: the free starting point

**Best for:** Your own search data plus keyword and CPC planning | **Price:** Free | **What it replaces:** Keyword research, first-party SEO data and CPC planning | **Main limitation:** No competitor ad history

With no budget, I would start with Google rather than another freemium competitor platform. Search Console gives you your own queries, impressions, clicks, CTR, average position, countries, devices and landing pages. Keyword Planner gives keyword ideas, search-volume ranges and bid estimates.

![Google Search Console, the free source of the clicks, impressions and positions Google recorded for your own site](https://rankbuddy.io/i/6d45dd47-b491-4793-93d0-e2cd2f7db294)

![Google Ads Keyword Planner page, the free keyword tool built for ad campaigns](https://rankbuddy.io/i/a2e4f3fc-a88a-4a22-ac53-7ab289659714)

The limitation is exactly what makes SpyFu valuable: Google does not hand you a decade of a competitor's keyword and ad history. These tools replace the **own-site and keyword-research side** of SpyFu, not its core competitor-spying proposition.

RankBuddy's [Google Search Console integration](https://rankbuddy.io/features/google-search-console) is built on this first-party data, because recommendations should come from what is actually happening to your site, not an outside estimate of it.

***

## 2. Semrush: the broadest SpyFu alternative for SEO + PPC

**Best for:** Teams that want competitor SEO and paid-search research in one larger platform | **Price:** SEO Toolkit from $139.95/month; Advertising Toolkit from $99/month billed annually | **What it replaces:** Most of SpyFu's SEO and PPC research, plus broader marketing workflows | **Main limitation:** Much more expensive, and SEO and PPC are sold separately

Semrush is the obvious upgrade when SpyFu feels too narrow. The detail most comparisons miss is that Semrush now sells SEO and advertising as **separate toolkits**:

* **SEO Toolkit** from $139.95/month: keyword research, competitor analysis, Position Tracking, Site Audit, backlinks and AI-search visibility.
* **Advertising Toolkit** from $99/month billed annually: competitor keyword research, Google Shopping ads research and campaign tools. The $220/month Pro tier adds access to all competitor ads, including display, video and social.

![Semrush plans and pricing on monthly billing: SEO at $139.95, Starter at $199, Pro+ at $299 and Advanced at $549 per month](https://rankbuddy.io/i/cd153481-7c99-4021-b6e9-78ff641cb792)

So the true like-for-like comparison with SpyFu's SEO + PPC coverage is roughly $139.95 + $99 a month, against $39 for SpyFu Basic.

I would choose Semrush when the same team needs much more than competitive search intelligence: audits, backlinks, rankings, content and AI visibility in one ecosystem. If all I needed was competitor paid keywords and historical ads, moving from SpyFu to a much larger Semrush stack would solve a problem I did not have.

My [free Semrush alternative](https://rankbuddy.io/blog/free-semrush-alternative) comparison goes deeper into the platform and its cheaper replacements.

***

## 3. Ahrefs: the alternative I would choose for organic competitors and backlinks

**Best for:** Organic competitor research, backlinks and content gaps | **Price:** Ahrefs Free for verified sites, Starter $29/month, Lite $129/month | **What it replaces:** SpyFu's organic research and backlink workflows | **Main limitation:** Weak fit for competitor PPC history

Ahrefs is the product I would look at when "competitor" means **organic competitor**, not advertiser.

![Ahrefs Site Explorer is sold on studying any website, which is exactly the part the free account keeps for paid plans](https://rankbuddy.io/i/93cf190d-365a-4f84-b4f2-7f51dd3fbcd2)

Where Ahrefs beats SpyFu is the connection between keywords, pages and links. If a competitor owns an important topic, I can open the page generating that traffic and then examine the backlink profile supporting it. That produces a much richer organic picture than a keyword list.

What I would not do is try to recreate SpyFu's Google Ads history in Ahrefs. If paid-search spying is the job, SpyFu or Semrush makes more sense.

***

## 4. Google Ads Transparency Center: the free way to see competitors' ads

**Best for:** Seeing which ads a competitor is running | **Price:** Free | **What it replaces:** Part of SpyFu's ad-copy research | **Main limitation:** No keywords, no spend estimates and limited history

Google's Ads Transparency Center lets anyone search an advertiser or domain and see the ads it runs on Google Search, YouTube and Display, filtered by region, date and format. For checking a competitor's current messaging, offers and landing pages, it is free and comes directly from Google, so there is nothing estimated about the ads themselves.

It does not show which keywords trigger those ads, how much the competitor spends or a decade of history, which is exactly what SpyFu adds. If you also advertise on social, Meta's Ad Library does the same job for Facebook and Instagram.

Used together with Keyword Planner, it covers a surprising amount of basic PPC competitor research for $0.

***

## 5. RankBuddy: when competitor data needs to become SEO work

**Best for:** Founders and small teams who want competitor SEO findings prioritized and acted on | **Price:** 5 free runs, then Starter $29/month, Pro $49/month, Scale $79/month | **What it replaces:** SEO competitor analysis, content gaps, keyword prioritization and ongoing execution | **Main limitation:** No historical PPC ad database

RankBuddy is my own product, so the boundary matters. If your job is reconstructing a competitor's Google Ads strategy, use SpyFu. RankBuddy does not have SpyFu's ad archive, and I would not describe it as a cheaper PPC research platform.

The problem it solves starts after competitor research. RankBuddy's [competitor analysis](https://rankbuddy.io/features/competitor-analysis) identifies the domains competing with your site in search, then looks at their authority, strongest pages, keyword footprint, estimated organic traffic and the topics they cover that you do not. Here it compares a site's authority with the competitors it already tracks:

![RankBuddy chat showing an Ahrefs Domain Rating comparison table for rankbuddy.io and four stored competitors, with DR scores and color-coded bars](https://rankbuddy.io/i/9799b343-c585-4d0c-aa5e-92385a6e70ce)

If a competitor has a page ranking for 40 relevant queries, I do not just want those 40 rows exported. I want to know whether they share one intent, whether my site already has a competing page, whether my authority is realistic for the SERP, what my page is missing, and whether this opportunity matters more than everything else in the backlog. RankBuddy's [SEO strategy](https://rankbuddy.io/features/seo-strategy) combines competitor research, keyword data and audit findings into one ordered plan for that reason, and [backlink analysis](https://rankbuddy.io/features/backlink-analysis) shows where a competitor's link advantage actually comes from.

The distinction is simple:

* **SpyFu tells you what competitors are buying and ranking for.**
* **RankBuddy decides which part of that SEO evidence you should act on next.**

For a broader look at AI-assisted competitor workflows, see my [AI tools for competitor analysis](https://rankbuddy.io/blog/ai-tools-for-competitor-analysis) guide.

## 6. SE Ranking: stronger when rank tracking and agency workflow matter

**Best for:** Agencies, consultants and teams managing multiple SEO projects | **Price:** Core $129/month, Growth $279/month, 14-day free trial | **What it replaces:** Organic competitor research, tracking, backlinks, audits and reporting | **Main limitation:** PPC intelligence is not central

SE Ranking makes more sense than SpyFu when competitor research is one part of an ongoing agency workflow: tracking rankings for many keywords, monitoring several sites, auditing them, researching competitors, managing backlinks and producing repeatable client reports.

![SE Ranking homepage with a 14 day free trial and no credit card required](https://rankbuddy.io/i/a1137218-0a05-4117-bee9-53632e7899e0)

That is a different job from opening SpyFu to inspect one competitor's Google Ads history. For agencies, the bigger workflow justifies the higher price. For occasional PPC intelligence, SpyFu stays more focused.

***

## 7. Serpstat: a lower-cost traditional SEO suite

**Best for:** Freelancers and teams that want several SEO jobs in one lower-cost platform | **Price:** Individual from $50/month billed annually, 7-day trial | **What it replaces:** Organic research, keyword research, rank tracking, backlinks and audits | **Main limitation:** Not a historical PPC specialist

Serpstat's Individual plan starts at $50/month on annual billing and includes keyword research, site analysis, rank tracking, site audit and backlink analysis. The Team plan ($100/month billed annually) adds API access, AI integrations and scheduled reports.

![Serpstat homepage: one box for a domain, keyword or URL, with a free 7 day trial offered](https://rankbuddy.io/i/1e5c819d-798b-491f-ae52-d3f0d15f24c7)

I would choose Serpstat over SpyFu when I wanted one lower-cost subscription for several normal SEO jobs. That makes it a good **SEO alternative to SpyFu**, but not a better tool for a PPC specialist. And $50 a month is not automatically better value than $39: it depends on which reports you actually open.

***

## 8. Similarweb: better when you need the whole competitor, not only search

**Best for:** Total competitor traffic, acquisition channels and market intelligence | **Price:** Free tools; paid plans from about $125/month billed annually | **What it replaces:** Competitor intelligence beyond SEO and PPC keywords | **Main limitation:** Expensive at team tiers and not built for SEO execution

SpyFu looks at competition through search. Similarweb looks at competition through traffic and markets.

If I wanted to know which keywords a competitor buys, I would use SpyFu. If I wanted to know whether its growth comes from search, direct traffic, referrals, social, paid channels or a wider market shift, Similarweb is far more useful. That is why the two should not be treated as interchangeable competitor dashboards.

My [Similarweb alternative](https://rankbuddy.io/blog/similarweb-alternative) guide covers its pricing and the cheaper ways to get part of that picture.

## 9. Ubersuggest: the budget alternative when you mostly need basic SEO

**Best for:** Solo founders and small sites that need basic keyword and competitor research | **Price:** Individual $29/month or $290 lifetime | **What it replaces:** Basic organic competitor research, keywords, rankings, audits and backlinks | **Main limitation:** Very limited replacement for SpyFu's PPC data

Ubersuggest fits someone searching for a **cheap SpyFu alternative** who does not actually need SpyFu's strongest feature: normal keyword research, checking competitor pages, tracking a small keyword set, basic audits and backlinks.

What I would not do is pick Ubersuggest because it looks cheaper and then expect historical competitor ad research. For a small organic-first site, that may not matter at all. I compared this category in my [free Ubersuggest alternative](https://rankbuddy.io/blog/free-ubersuggest-alternative) guide.

## Other SpyFu alternatives worth knowing

These solve narrower jobs, but one of them may be exactly what you need:

* **Meta Ad Library** — free, and the fastest way to see a competitor's active Facebook and Instagram ads.
* **Mangools** — a simple keyword and SERP toolkit (KWFinder, SERPChecker, SERPWatcher) from $18.85/month billed annually, good for small sites that mainly need keyword research.
* **Moz Pro** — from $49/month, useful if your team already works with Domain Authority. I covered it in my [Moz alternative](https://rankbuddy.io/blog/moz-alternative) comparison.
* **Screaming Frog** — free for up to 500 URLs, the tool I would add if technical SEO is the gap SpyFu leaves.

## Which SpyFu feature should you replace with which tool?

| SpyFu job | Alternative I would consider |
| ------------------------------------- | ------------------------------ |
| Free own-site search data | Google Search Console |
| Keyword and CPC planning | Google Ads Keyword Planner |
| Competitors' Google ad copy | Google Ads Transparency Center |
| Competitors' social ads | Meta Ad Library |
| Broad SEO + PPC competitor research | Semrush |
| Organic competitors | Ahrefs or Semrush |
| Competitor backlinks | Ahrefs |
| SEO competitor research + execution | RankBuddy |
| Agency rank tracking and reporting | SE Ranking |
| Lower-cost all-in-one SEO | Serpstat |
| Total competitor traffic and channels | Similarweb |
| Budget basic SEO | Ubersuggest |
| Deep historical Google Ads research | Keep SpyFu |

That last row matters. Sometimes the best SpyFu alternative is SpyFu. If you regularly use its ad history and it directly shapes your paid-search decisions, replacing it with a generic SEO suite can mean paying more for worse access to the feature you actually cared about.

## How I would replace SpyFu for $0

If I ran one small website with no SEO or PPC software budget, I would not try to reproduce SpyFu completely. I would use:

1. **Google Search Console** for my own organic search performance.
2. **Google Ads Keyword Planner** for keyword demand and CPC estimates.
3. **Google Ads Transparency Center** and **Meta Ad Library** to see which ads competitors are running.
4. **SpyFu's free searches** for an occasional competitor snapshot.
5. **Ahrefs Free** for my own backlinks and technical audits.

The obvious limitation is competitor depth. A free stack answers a lot of questions, but it will not recreate years of paid-search history for thousands of competing domains. If that data regularly saves or makes money, paying for SpyFu is probably rational.

## The cheapest SpyFu alternative is not always the cheapest workflow

We compare subscriptions as if software is the whole cost of SEO. SpyFu costs $39 a month, a free tool costs $0, so that looks like a $39 saving.

But suppose the free setup means another three hours each month collecting keyword data, comparing competitors, clustering opportunities, deciding what to update, writing briefs and checking results. The cheaper software did not create the cheaper workflow.

With competitor research this is especially obvious. Finding 500 competitor keywords is easy. Deciding which 10 deserve work is harder. Publishing and improving the pages is harder again. The right alternative depends on which part of the workflow is actually expensive for you.

## When I would keep SpyFu

I would keep SpyFu if historical paid-search competitor research is a regular part of my job. It still shows competitor paid keywords, estimated budgets, historical ad copy and changes in PPC activity over more than a decade, and that specialization is why it is hard to replace at $39 a month.

I would also keep it if the subscription already produces decisions I use, or if my workflow revolves around its exports and Kombat keyword comparisons. Switching to Semrush for more features does not make sense if the extra modules stay unopened, and changing software has its own cost.

I would replace SpyFu when I can name a clear missing job: deeper backlinks, stronger technical auditing, better agency tracking, broader market intelligence, or an execution layer that keeps the work moving after the competitor report is finished.

## My verdict

For **free SEO data on my own site**, I would start with **Google Search Console**. For **PPC competitor history**, I would keep **SpyFu**, add **Google Ads Transparency Center** for free ad checks, or move to **Semrush** if I also needed a broad SEO suite. For **organic rankings, pages and backlinks**, I would choose **Ahrefs**; for **agency tracking and reporting**, **SE Ranking**; for an affordable traditional suite, **Serpstat**; for **total traffic and acquisition channels**, **Similarweb**; for basic research on a small budget, **Ubersuggest**.

And if my problem was not finding more competitor data but deciding **what SEO work to do because of it**, I would use **RankBuddy**. Not because it recreates SpyFu's PPC archive — it does not — but because after a competitor sweep I want one decision: which realistic opportunity should my site work on next? That could mean updating an existing page, creating a missing commercial page, fixing internal links, closing a content gap, strengthening backlinks, or leaving an attractive keyword alone because the SERP is unrealistic for my site.

That is the difference between **competitor intelligence** and **competitor execution**.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is there a free alternative to SpyFu?

Yes, for parts of it. Google Search Console covers your own search data, Google Ads Keyword Planner covers keyword and CPC research, and Google Ads Transparency Center and Meta Ad Library show which ads competitors are running, all for free. SpyFu's own free searches are useful for occasional checks. No free tool replaces SpyFu's years of competitor keyword and ad history.

### Is SpyFu free?

Partly. You can search a domain or keyword on SpyFu without paying and see a truncated overview of organic and paid keywords, estimated clicks, ad budget, competitors and ads. Full results, exports and rank tracking require a paid plan.

### How much does SpyFu cost?

SpyFu Basic costs $39/month, or about $29/month billed annually. Pro + AI is $59 for the first month and $119/month after that, and Team/Agency is $249/month. Annual billing saves 25%, and all plans have a 30-day money-back guarantee.

### What is the best alternative to SpyFu?

It depends on the job. For SEO and PPC in one platform, Semrush. For organic competitors and backlinks, Ahrefs. For free competitor ad checks, Google Ads Transparency Center. For agency rank tracking, SE Ranking. For total competitor traffic, Similarweb. For turning competitor SEO data into prioritized work, RankBuddy. For historical Google Ads research, SpyFu itself is still the cheapest option.

### Is Semrush better than SpyFu?

Semrush is broader, with deeper SEO, audits, backlinks and a separate Advertising Toolkit, but it costs much more: $139.95/month for the SEO Toolkit plus from $99/month for advertising research. SpyFu is cheaper and more focused on historical competitor PPC and SEO keyword data.

### Is iSpionage still available?

No. iSpionage shut down in July 2025 and its site now redirects to TapClicks, which says the iSpionage tools are no longer available. For PPC competitor research, look at SpyFu, Semrush's Advertising Toolkit or Google Ads Transparency Center instead.

### How can I see competitors' Google ads for free?

Use Google Ads Transparency Center. Search an advertiser or domain to see the ads it runs on Google Search, YouTube and Display, filtered by region, date and format. It does not show keywords or spend, which is what paid tools like SpyFu add.

### What is cheaper than SpyFu?

Free tools such as Google Search Console, Keyword Planner and Google Ads Transparency Center cost nothing. Among paid tools, Ahrefs Starter ($29/month), RankBuddy (from $29/month) and Ubersuggest ($29/month or $290 lifetime) cost less than SpyFu Basic, but none of them offers SpyFu's historical Google Ads data.
