The key difference was always scope. Long Tail Pro answered "which long-tail keywords can my small site win?" Ahrefs answers that plus "why does this competitor rank, who links to them, and what is broken on my site?"

## What Long Tail Pro users actually need to replace

Before choosing a replacement, it helps to list what you used Long Tail Pro for.

### Bulk long-tail keyword discovery

Most users entered a few seed keywords and pulled hundreds of long-tail variations with volume. Every tool in this article does this. Ahrefs, Mangools and Keysearch all generate large keyword lists from a seed, and LowFruits specializes in long, low-volume questions.

### A competitiveness score

Long Tail Pro's **Keyword Competitiveness (KC)** score was the feature people remember. It rated how hard the current first page would be to beat on a 0–100 scale.

Ahrefs uses **Keyword Difficulty (KD)**, also 0–100, which estimates how many referring domains you would need to reach the top 10. The numbers are not interchangeable, so do not carry over old thresholds such as "KC under 30" and expect them to mean the same thing in KD. Mangools and Keysearch have their own difficulty scores, and LowFruits takes a different approach by flagging weak sites directly in the SERP.

### SERP analysis

Long Tail Pro showed metrics for the top 10 results so you could spot weak pages. Ahrefs' SERP overview does this with more data: Domain Rating, referring domains, estimated traffic and keywords for every ranking URL. Two details matter here:

- **Starter is a real option for occasional research.** It includes Keywords Explorer, but 200 credits a month disappear quickly if you research every day. Ahrefs also says Starter cannot be topped up with extra credits.
- **Content Kit is extra.** AI writing and content grading tools start at $99/month on top of a plan.

If you used Long Tail Pro a few times a month, Starter may be enough. If you used it daily, you are looking at Lite or a cheaper dedicated keyword tool.

## How to find long-tail keywords in Ahrefs the Long Tail Pro way

If you do move to Ahrefs, this is the workflow that feels closest to Long Tail Pro:

1. Open **Keywords Explorer** and enter two or three broad seed keywords.
2. Go to **Matching terms** and switch on **Questions** for question-style long-tail queries.
3. Filter by **KD** (for example 0–10) and set a **Words** filter of four or more.
4. Sort by volume and remove anything outside your niche.
5. Check **Parent topic**. If a keyword shares its parent topic with a broader term, you may be able to rank for both with one page.
6. Open the **SERP overview** for your shortlist and look for pages with few referring domains, forums or thin articles in the top 10.

Use third-party numbers to compare options, not as exact figures.

## When Ahrefs is worth it for former Long Tail Pro users

I would pay for Ahrefs Lite if keyword research is only one part of my SEO work. When I also need to see which competitor pages earn traffic, who links to them and what is broken on my own site, Ahrefs replaces three or four smaller tools at once.

I would not pay for Lite if I only did what Long Tail Pro did. For long-tail discovery and a difficulty score, Keysearch, KWFinder or LowFruits cost a fraction of the price, and Ahrefs Starter covers occasional research.

I would also not choose any tool before looking at Search Console. The best long-tail keywords for an existing site are often the ones it already has impressions for.
