An SEO MCP server lets Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor pull real SEO data while you talk to it: keyword volumes, rankings, backlinks, your own Search Console. Without one, an assistant guesses. With the right one, it can answer "which competitor pages should I worry about?" with numbers.

There are now dozens of these servers, and most lists of the "best" ones are written by a vendor that ranks itself first. I build one of them too (RankBuddy), so I will say where it fits and where it does not.

What I tried to do differently: compare them on the four things that decide whether you will actually use one. **Where the data comes from, where it works, how hard it is to set up, and what one question really costs.** For the servers I could run while researching this article (Semrush, RankBuddy and Search Console through RankBuddy), I logged real usage. Everything else comes from each vendor's own documentation and pricing page, checked in October 2026.

**Quick answer:**

* **You already pay for an SEO suite:** use its MCP. Ahrefs (from $129 a month), Semrush (from $199), SE Ranking (from $129) all include one.
* **You want raw data and the lowest cost per call:** DataForSEO, pay as you go from a $50 top-up.
* **You want your own Search Console in the chat:** free open-source mcp-gsc if you can set up Google Cloud, or a hosted connector if you cannot.
* **You crawl sites for technical audits:** Screaming Frog's MCP, if you already have a licence.
* **You want one connector for your Search Console plus keyword and SERP data, without a suite:** RankBuddy, from $29 a month. Its index is smaller than the suites'.

| Screaming Frog MCP | Your own crawls | Local | No | SEO Spider licence, $279 a year |
| Firecrawl MCP | Scraped and crawled pages of any site | Hosted or local | Yes | Free tier, then from $16 a month (billed yearly) |

"Works in Claude on the web" means you can add it in the normal Claude app in a browser without running anything on your computer. Local servers work in Claude Desktop, Claude Code and Cursor.

## What one question really costs

This is the part every "best MCP" list skips, and it is the part that decides your bill. Most servers charge in units or credits, not dollars, and each question can use several calls.

I logged what I could:

* **Semrush:** a research question that pulled three reports (a batch of keywords, a competitor's top 10 pages, a backlink summary) used **about 190 API units**. Keyword and organic reports cost 10 units per row. On Starter's 50,000 units, that is roughly 260 such questions a month, or about **$0.76 per question** if you divide the plan price by its units. I wrote up the full log in [Semrush MCP vs Ahrefs MCP](https://rankbuddy.io/blog/semrush-mcp-vs-ahrefs-mcp).
* **RankBuddy:** one question uses **one credit**, however many tools it calls. While researching this article I asked one question that looked up Google's top 10 for 6 queries and the metrics for 24 phrases, and it used one credit. Starter has 100 credits for $29, so about **$0.29 per question**, but those credits are shared with everything else in the app.
* **Ahrefs** (from its published formula, not my test): each call costs at least 50 units, or rows × field cost if higher. A three-call question lands around 150 to 500 units, so roughly **$0.10 to $0.32 per question** on Lite.
* **DataForSEO** (from its pricing page): Google results start at $0.0006 per SERP and keyword data at $0.0012 per task, so a typical question costs **well under a cent** in data. You pay a $50 minimum top-up, and new accounts get $1 of free credit.
* **SE Ranking:** Core includes 25,000 API credits, but the cost per MCP call is not published, so I cannot give a per-question figure.

Two caveats from my own runs. First, the assistant decides how many rows to request unless you tell it, and "show me everything" can cost ten times a "top 10" question. Second, cheaper data is not always complete data: for the brand-new search phrases in this topic, DataForSEO (which RankBuddy uses) had no data for 16 of the 24 I checked, while Semrush returned data for 12 of the 13 I checked. If you research very new topics, a big suite's database may simply know more.

## How I picked and judged them

I looked at the servers that show up in the current results for "best MCP server for SEO", in Reddit threads about SEO MCPs, and in the main MCP directories. I kept the ones that are maintained, documented and actually about SEO data, and judged them on:

1. **Data source:** whose numbers you get, and whether your own Search Console is included.
2. **Where it works:** Claude on the web, Claude Desktop, ChatGPT, Cursor.
3. **Setup:** one-click connector, pasted URL, or a local install with keys.
4. **Cost per question:** what a real question uses, not just the plan price.
5. **Safety:** read-only or able to change things.

***

## 1. Ahrefs MCP: best if you already pay for Ahrefs

**Best for:** teams on Ahrefs Lite or higher, especially for backlink work.

Ahrefs runs an official remote server at [`https://api.ahrefs.com/mcp/mcp`](https://api.ahrefs.com/mcp/mcp) that you add from Claude's connector list. You approve a consent screen, which creates an API key with MCP scope. It covers Site Explorer, Keywords Explorer, SERP overview, Rank Tracker, Site Audit, Brand Radar, Web Analytics and the Search Console data you connected in Ahrefs, grouped into 20 tool categories you can switch on and off.

**Cost:** Lite at $129 a month with 200,000 API units and up to 100 rows per request; Standard has 800,000 units and 250 rows; Advanced 2 million and 500 rows. Every call costs at least 50 units.

**Watch out:** the 100-row cap on Lite means paging for big exports, and Ahrefs does not allow calling the MCP endpoint from your own scripts (use the REST API for that).

***

## 2. Semrush MCP: best for keyword and PPC research on Semrush data

**Best for:** Semrush subscribers who want answers instead of reports.

Semrush's server lives at [`https://mcp.semrush.com/v2/mcp`](https://mcp.semrush.com/v2/mcp), with official apps in Claude, ChatGPT and Perplexity. It is read-only. In Claude it shows up as 14 tools: 12 "discovery" tools (domain overview, keyword research, backlinks, competitors, PPC, Position Tracking, Site Audit and more) plus two that fetch a report's parameters and run it. In practice every report takes three calls.

**Cost:** MCP access is listed on Semrush One Starter ($199 a month) and Pro+, plus the legacy SEO Classic Pro and Guru plans, each with 50,000 API units. More units come only with the higher plans. Traffic data needs a separate Trends API plan.

**Watch out:** units go fast on big pulls, and a young site may get no data at all. Semrush had nothing on rankbuddy.io in any regional database.

## 3. SE Ranking MCP: best value among the full suites

**Best for:** agencies and small teams that want a suite's data for less than Semrush.

SE Ranking's remote server is [`https://api.seranking.com/mcp`](https://api.seranking.com/mcp), with OAuth sign-in and guides for Claude, ChatGPT, Codex, Cursor, VS Code, Windsurf, Gemini CLI and more. It also ships a set of SEO skills for Claude that sit on top of the server.

**Cost:** Core is $129 a month ($103.20 billed yearly) with 25,000 API credits and MCP access; Growth is $279 with 100,000 credits. There is a 14-day free trial without a card.

**Watch out:** not every API endpoint is available through MCP, the per-call credit cost is not published, and SE Ranking says read-only API keys are not available yet, so a key has the same access as your account.

***

## 4. DataForSEO MCP: best raw data for the money

**Best for:** builders and technical SEOs who want cheap data and do not mind shaping it.

DataForSEO offers a hosted server at [`https://mcp.dataforseo.com/v3/mcp`](https://mcp.dataforseo.com/v3/mcp) and a local one (`npx -y dataforseo-mcp-server`). It exposes eight APIs: SERP, AI Optimization, Keyword Data, On-Page, DataForSEO Labs, Backlinks, Business Data and Domain Analytics.

**Cost:** pay as you go with a $50 minimum top-up and $1 of free trial credit. Google results start at $0.0006 per SERP.

**Watch out:** you get data, not opinions, so the assistant does more of the work to pick the right endpoint. Cursor only allows 40 active MCP tools, so you may need to switch modules off. And its database can be thin on very new search phrases.

***

## 5. Google Search Console MCP (mcp-gsc): best free way to your own data

**Best for:** people who write code and want their own Search Console in Claude Desktop or Cursor for free.

Google has no official Search Console MCP. The most complete community server, mcp-gsc, runs on your computer with a Google Cloud OAuth client or service account. It covers search analytics, period comparisons, URL inspection (single and batch), indexing checks and sitemaps; tools that add or delete sites and sitemaps stay off unless you enable them.

**Cost:** free.

**Watch out:** it does not work in Claude on the web or ChatGPT, and the Google Cloud setup is the slow part. I compared it with the hosted options in my [Google Search Console MCP guide](https://rankbuddy.io/blog/google-search-console-mcp).

***

## 6. RankBuddy MCP: best for Search Console plus market data without a suite (mine)

**Best for:** founders and small teams who want their own Search Console and keyword data in Claude or ChatGPT, without paying for a full suite.

This is my product, so read this one with that in mind. RankBuddy is a hosted server at [`https://mcp.rankbuddy.io/mcp`](https://mcp.rankbuddy.io/mcp) with 17 read-only tools: your Search Console (performance and URL inspection), page checks, PageSpeed, sitemaps and robots.txt, keyword volume and ideas from DataForSEO, Google's current top 10, competitor keywords and gaps, backlinks and Ahrefs Domain Rating. You connect Search Console inside the RankBuddy app with a Google sign-in, then paste one URL into Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor or VS Code.

**Cost:** one question uses one credit. Starter is $29 a month with 100 credits, Pro $49 with 200, Scale $79 with 400. The first question is free.

**Watch out:** its keyword and backlink data come from DataForSEO and Ahrefs DR, not a giant index of its own, so a suite will know more about very new or niche phrases. 100 credits on Starter is fewer questions than Semrush's units give you at typical usage, and the credits are shared with the rest of the app.

***

## 7. Screaming Frog MCP: best for crawling and technical audits

**Best for:** technical SEOs who already crawl with Screaming Frog.

Screaming Frog added an official MCP server to SEO Spider 24. It runs locally next to the app, either launched by the client in headless mode or exposed as a local URL while SEO Spider is open. The assistant can start, pause and resume crawls, load and export them, generate reports and bulk exports, and read page details and links.

**Cost:** it is a paid-licence feature: $279 a year per licence. It does not work in the free version.

**Watch out:** it runs on your machine, so it only works when that machine is on; it needs database storage mode; and it includes file and script tools (Node.js tools are off by default), so treat it with more care than a read-only data server.

***

## 8. Firecrawl MCP: best for pulling competitor pages

**Best for:** analysing what competitors actually publish.

Firecrawl is not an SEO data tool. It scrapes, crawls, maps and searches any website and returns clean content, which makes it the easiest way to let Claude read twenty competitor pages before writing a brief. It is in Claude's connector list.

**Cost:** a free tier with 1,000 credits, then from $16 a month billed yearly.

**Watch out:** no rankings, volumes or backlinks, and it is not read-only.

***

## 9. Mangools MCP: cheapest suite data in a chat

**Best for:** small sites and freelancers on a budget.

Mangools includes API and MCP access on every paid plan, with keyword, SERP, rank tracking and backlink data from its tools (KWFinder, SERPChecker, SERPWatcher, LinkMiner).

**Cost:** from $37.70 a month billed yearly.

**Watch out:** smaller limits and a smaller database than the big suites, and no site audit.

***

## 10. Serpstat MCP: an alternative suite with team pricing

**Best for:** teams already on Serpstat.

Serpstat includes MCP access from its Team plan, with keyword, domain and backlink data in ChatGPT and Claude.

**Cost:** Team plan at $100 a month billed yearly.

**Watch out:** the MCP is not on the cheapest plan, so compare its data with your current tool on your own niche before switching.

***

## Others worth knowing

* **Google Analytics MCP:** an official, experimental local server from Google for read-only GA4 reports in Gemini CLI, Claude Code and similar tools.
* **Keywords Everywhere** sells credits for keyword metrics and offers an MCP server for them.
* **Open-source "SEO MCP" projects on GitHub** are free, but some of them, including unofficial Ahrefs servers, scrape a third-party tool instead of using its official API. They can stop working without warning and may break that tool's terms of service.

***

## Which one should you pick?

Start from what you already pay for, then fill the gap.

| If you... | Use |
| -------------------------------------------------------------------------- | ---------------------------------- |
| Pay for Ahrefs, Semrush, SE Ranking, Mangools or Serpstat | That vendor's MCP first |
| Want the cheapest raw data and can handle setup | DataForSEO |
| Want your own Search Console for free and can run code | mcp-gsc |
| Want Search Console plus market data in Claude on the web, without a suite | RankBuddy |
| Audit sites with crawls | Screaming Frog |
| Need competitor content for briefs | Firecrawl, alongside a data server |

Two rules apply whatever you choose. **Tell the assistant how many rows you want**, because that is where costs explode. And **give it a method as well as data**: a skill that says what to check turns a pile of numbers into an answer. My guide to [Claude SEO skills](https://rankbuddy.io/blog/claude-seo-skills) shows how, and the [RankBuddy MCP page](https://rankbuddy.io/mcp) has the setup steps for every client. For the bigger picture of chatbots, data connectors and agents, see my overview of [SEO chat tools](https://rankbuddy.io/blog/seo-chat-tools).

## Frequently asked questions

### What is the best MCP server for SEO?

It depends on what you already pay for. If you have Ahrefs, Semrush or SE Ranking, use that vendor's official MCP, since the data is included in your plan. If you want the cheapest raw data, DataForSEO is pay as you go. If you mostly need your own Search Console plus keyword and SERP data in Claude or ChatGPT without a suite, a hosted connector such as RankBuddy is the simpler route.

### Is there a free SEO MCP server?

Yes. mcp-gsc is a free open-source server for your own Google Search Console data, but it runs on your computer and needs a Google Cloud setup. Firecrawl has a free tier for scraping pages. Most servers with keyword, ranking and backlink data need a paid plan or prepaid credits.

### How much does one question cost with an SEO MCP server?

In my own runs, a three-report research question on Semrush used about 190 API units, roughly $0.76 if you divide the Starter price by its units. On RankBuddy one question uses one credit, about $0.29 on Starter. From the published formulas, Ahrefs works out to roughly $0.10 to $0.32 per question on Lite, and DataForSEO to well under a cent in data.

### Which SEO MCP servers work in Claude on the web?

Hosted servers work in Claude on the web: Ahrefs, Semrush, SE Ranking, DataForSEO (hosted version), RankBuddy, Firecrawl, Mangools and Serpstat. Local servers such as mcp-gsc and Screaming Frog work only in Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor and similar apps on your computer.

### Does the Screaming Frog MCP work with the free version?

No. The Screaming Frog MCP server is part of SEO Spider 24 and needs a paid licence, $279 a year per licence. It runs locally next to the app, so it only works while that computer is on.

### Is there an official Google Search Console MCP server?

No. Google has an official experimental MCP server for Google Analytics, but not for Search Console. The options are community servers like mcp-gsc that you run yourself, suites that include your connected Search Console (such as Ahrefs), or hosted connectors like RankBuddy.

### Are SEO MCP servers safe to connect?

Most data servers are read-only: Semrush, Ahrefs and RankBuddy only read data. Check servers that can write or run things, such as Screaming Frog (file and script tools) and Firecrawl. Avoid unofficial servers that scrape a third-party tool, since they can break without warning and may violate that tool's terms.

### Is RankBuddy a replacement for Semrush or Ahrefs?

No. RankBuddy combines your own Search Console with keyword data, Google's top 10, competitor gaps and backlinks from DataForSEO and Ahrefs Domain Rating, but it does not have a giant index of its own. If you need deep backlink or market research at scale, a full suite will know more.
