Ahrefs and KWFinder are often compared as if they were the same kind of tool. They are not. KWFinder is the keyword research tool inside Mangools, a small, friendly SEO toolkit. Ahrefs is a full SEO platform where keyword research is one part of a much larger workflow built around backlinks and competitor data.

That difference shows up everywhere: in price, in how keyword difficulty is calculated, in how much competitor data you can see and in what you can do after you find a keyword.

So the useful question is not "which one has more features?" It is **what do you need keyword research for, and how much of the rest of Ahrefs would you actually use?**

I compared both using their current pricing pages and documentation in September 2026, looking at the jobs people actually buy them for: finding keywords, judging difficulty, researching competitors and tracking results.

**Quick answer:** choose **KWFinder** if keyword research is your main SEO job and you want the simplest, cheapest workflow: Mangools Basic costs $61/month or $37.70/month billed annually, and includes KWFinder, SERPChecker, SERPWatcher, LinkMiner and SiteProfiler. Choose **Ahrefs** if you also need deep competitor keyword data, backlinks and site audits: Starter costs $29/month with 200 credits, and the full workflow starts at Lite for $129/month. If you are deciding what to publish on your own site, start with **Google Search Console** before paying for either.

***

## TL;DR: Ahrefs vs KWFinder in 2026

* **Cheapest useful plan:** KWFinder (Mangools Basic, $37.70/month billed annually) for daily research; Ahrefs Starter ($29/month) for occasional research
* **Bigger keyword database:** Ahrefs, 28.7 billion keywords vs about 2.5 billion
* **Better for local research:** KWFinder, with around 65,000 locations down to city level
* **Better for competitor keywords:** Ahrefs, with full organic keyword data for any domain
* **Keyword difficulty:** both use 0–100, but calculate it differently, so the numbers are not interchangeable
* **Backlinks and site audits:** Ahrefs by a wide margin; Mangools has no site audit
* **Easier to learn:** KWFinder
* **API and MCP:** included on every Mangools plan; on Ahrefs from Lite

If you run one site and mostly need to find keywords you can realistically rank for, KWFinder is enough. If keyword research is one step in a bigger competitive SEO workflow, Ahrefs is the better investment.

The two rows that decide most purchases are **competitor keywords** and **site audit**. If you need either one regularly, KWFinder alone will not be enough.

## Pricing in 2026

### KWFinder (Mangools) pricing

KWFinder is not sold on its own. You buy a Mangools plan, which includes all five Mangools tools. Current standard US-dollar prices from the Mangools pricing page:

| Plan | Monthly billing | Annual billing (per month) | Keyword lookups | Competitor keywords per lookup | Tracked keywords |
| ------- | --------------- | ----------------------------- | --------------- | ------------------------------ | ---------------- |
| Basic | $61/month | $37.70/month ($452.40/year) | 100 per 24h | 25 | 200 |
| Premium | $81/month | $52.70/month ($632.40/year) | 500 per 24h | 2,000 | 700 |
| Agency | $141/month | $97.70/month ($1,172.40/year) | 1,200 per 24h | 2,000 | 1,500 |

Mangools uses regional pricing, so visitors from some countries see roughly half these prices. There is a free account with 5 lookups per 24 hours and a 48-hour money-back guarantee.

Many comparison articles still list Mangools at $29.90/month or $49/month. Those prices are out of date.

### Ahrefs pricing

| Plan | Price | What matters for keyword research |
| ----------- | --------------------------------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Ahrefs Free | $0 | Site Explorer and Site Audit for verified sites; no Keywords Explorer |
| Starter | $29/month | Keywords Explorer, Site Explorer, Rank Tracker and Site Audit with 200 credits a month |
| Lite | $129/month ($107/month billed annually) | 1,000 credits per user a month, 750 tracked keywords, 50 keyword lists |
| Standard | $249/month | Unlimited credits, 2,000 tracked keywords |
| Advanced | $449/month | Unlimited credits, 5,000 tracked keywords |

Ahrefs says on its pricing page that it never runs discounts.

### What a year costs

For one person researching keywords every week, the realistic comparison is Mangools Basic against Ahrefs Lite:

* **Mangools Basic, annual:** $452.40 a year
* **Ahrefs Lite, annual:** about $1,284 a year
* **Ahrefs Starter, monthly only:** $348 a year, but with 200 credits a month

Ahrefs Lite costs almost three times as much as Mangools Basic. Whether that is worth it depends on how much of Ahrefs beyond Keywords Explorer you would use.

***

## Keyword database and search volume

Ahrefs says Keywords Explorer is built on **28.7 billion keywords**, filtered from 110 billion discovered, with 2.7 billion in the US alone, across 217 locations. Mangools says KWFinder has about **2.5 billion related keywords** and supports around **65,000 locations**.

Those two numbers measure different things:

* **Ahrefs has far more keywords.** For long-tail discovery in large markets and for niche queries with low volume, a bigger database surfaces more ideas.
* **KWFinder has far more locations.** Ahrefs covers countries and markets. KWFinder lets you research down to cities and regions, which matters for local businesses.

Neither tool's volumes are exact. Both estimate search volume from their own data, and third-party estimates regularly differ from what Google Search Console shows. In one [analysis of 1,635 websites](https://www.tryanalyze.ai/blog/traffic-estimations-accuracy), even Ahrefs and Semrush organic traffic estimates deviated from Search Console by a median of roughly 50–70%. Use volumes to compare keywords with each other, not as a traffic forecast.

***

## Keyword difficulty: two different formulas

Both tools show keyword difficulty on a 0–100 scale, but they calculate it differently.

* **Ahrefs KD** looks at the top 10 ranking pages and counts how many websites link to each of them. [Ahrefs describes it](https://ahrefs.com/blog/keyword-difficulty/) as a measure of how many referring domains you would need to reach the top 10.
* **Mangools KD** combines link authority metrics for every result on the first page: Domain Authority and Page Authority from Moz, and Citation Flow and Trust Flow from Majestic. [Mangools explains](https://mangools.com/kwfinder/features/keyword-difficulty/) that it turns these into a Link Profile Strength for each result and weights them into one score.

In practice, this means:

* **The same keyword will score differently** in each tool. A KD of 20 in Ahrefs is not the same as a KD of 20 in KWFinder.
* **Ahrefs KD is more directly about backlinks to the ranking pages.** It works well when you plan to build links.
* **Mangools KD blends domain and page authority.** It is easy to read and useful for a quick "can I compete?" check.

Neither score looks at content quality or search intent. Before targeting any keyword, open the SERP and look at who ranks. If you mix authority metrics from different tools, read [Domain Rating vs Domain Authority](https://rankbuddy.io/blog/domain-rating-vs-domain-authority) first.

## Finding keywords from competitors

This is where the two tools differ most for everyday work.

**Ahrefs** lets you enter any competitor in Site Explorer and see the full list of keywords it ranks for, with positions, traffic estimates and the pages that rank. From there you can run a content gap, compare several competitors and filter by difficulty. For many SEOs, this is the most valuable part of Ahrefs.

![Ahrefs Site Explorer is sold on studying any website, which is exactly the part the free account keeps for paid plans](https://rankbuddy.io/i/93cf190d-365a-4f84-b4f2-7f51dd3fbcd2)

**KWFinder** also has a search by domain, which shows the keywords a competitor ranks for. The limit is the number of rows: Mangools Basic returns 25 competitor keywords per lookup, while Premium and Agency return up to 2,000. If competitor research is a big part of your workflow, KWFinder Basic will feel restrictive.

My [content gap analysis guide](https://rankbuddy.io/blog/content-gap-analysis-guide) explains how to turn competitor keyword lists into pages worth writing.

***

## SERP analysis

Both tools show who ranks for a keyword and how strong each result is.

* **KWFinder** shows the SERP next to your keyword list, with authority metrics and link counts per result. SERPChecker, included in every Mangools plan, gives a deeper view with more metrics.
* **Ahrefs** shows the SERP overview in Keywords Explorer with Domain Rating, referring domains, estimated traffic and keywords for every ranking page, plus SERP history.

For judging whether a small site can rank, both are good. Ahrefs gives more data per result; KWFinder presents it more simply.

***

## Beyond keyword research: backlinks, audits and rank tracking

This is where Ahrefs pulls clearly ahead.

* **Backlinks.** Ahrefs has one of the largest backlink indexes available, with link history, anchors, link intersect and gap analysis. Mangools' LinkMiner is fine for quick checks, with 100,000 backlink rows a month on Basic, but it is not a replacement for Ahrefs Site Explorer.
* **Site audit.** Ahrefs includes Site Audit on every paid plan and on Ahrefs Free for verified sites. Mangools has no crawler or technical audit.
* **Rank tracking.** Ahrefs Rank Tracker is included from Starter. Mangools SERPWatcher is clean and easy to read, but Basic and Premium update rankings weekly; daily updates need the Agency plan.

If you would otherwise pay for a separate backlink tool and a separate crawler, Ahrefs' higher price looks much more reasonable.

***

## Usage limits: lookups vs credits

The two tools meter usage differently.

* **KWFinder** counts keyword lookups per 24 hours: 100 on Basic, 500 on Premium and 1,200 on Agency. The limit resets every day, which suits steady daily research.
* **Ahrefs** counts credits per month. Starter includes 200 credits a month, which disappear quickly if you research daily. Lite includes 1,000 credits per user a month. Standard and above include unlimited credits.

If you research keywords every day, KWFinder's daily allowance is easier to plan around than Ahrefs Starter's monthly credits.

***

## AI features, API and MCP

Both tools now bring their data into AI assistants.

* **Mangools** includes API and MCP access on every paid plan, which makes it one of the cheapest ways to get keyword, SERP and backlink data into ChatGPT or Claude.
* **Ahrefs** includes its MCP server on Lite and above, with 200,000 API units a month on Lite. Keywords Explorer also has AI features for generating keyword ideas and analyzing search intent.

I compare these connectors and other ways to use SEO data inside a chat in my guide to the [best SEO chat tools](https://rankbuddy.io/blog/seo-chat-tools).

***

## How I compared Ahrefs and KWFinder

I reviewed both pricing pages, plan limits and documentation in September 2026, including how each tool calculates keyword difficulty. I compared them on the jobs people usually buy them for: keyword discovery, difficulty, competitor keywords, SERP analysis, backlinks, audits, rank tracking and usage limits.

I did not run my own accuracy benchmark, so I do not claim one tool's volumes or difficulty scores are more accurate than the other's. Where I quote a number, it comes from the vendor's own page and the date I checked it.

I build RankBuddy, which I mention at the end. It is not a replacement for either keyword database.

## Which one should you choose?

| Your situation | Choose |
| ----------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------- |
| One site, keyword research is your main SEO job | KWFinder (Mangools Basic) |
| Local business targeting specific cities | KWFinder |
| Occasional research a few times a month | Ahrefs Starter |
| Regular competitor keyword research | Ahrefs Lite, or Mangools Premium at minimum |
| You also need backlinks and a site audit | Ahrefs |
| Agency with many clients and reporting | Ahrefs Standard or Mangools Agency |
| Cheapest SEO data inside ChatGPT or Claude | Mangools |
| Beginner who wants the easiest interface | KWFinder |

## When neither is the answer

Both tools are good at finding keywords. Neither tells you which keyword your own site should work on next, whether you already have a page for it, or whether an existing page just needs updating.

For a site that already has some traffic, the best keyword list is often in [Google Search Console](https://rankbuddy.io/blog/gsc-clicks-vs-impressions): queries where you already get impressions but sit on page two are usually faster wins than new keywords from any database.

That gap is what I built RankBuddy for. It starts from your Search Console data and your competitors, uses [keyword research](https://rankbuddy.io/features/keyword-research) to map keywords against the pages you already have, and turns the result into prioritized work.

![RankBuddy chat comparing the Ahrefs Domain Rating of rankbuddy.io with four stored competitors in one table](https://rankbuddy.io/i/9799b343-c585-4d0c-aa5e-92385a6e70ce)

It is not a replacement for Ahrefs or KWFinder if you need a large keyword database. It is the step that comes after one.

If you are looking beyond these two tools, see my [Mangools alternative](https://rankbuddy.io/blog/mangools-alternative) and [free Ahrefs alternative](https://rankbuddy.io/blog/free-ahrefs-alternative) comparisons, or [Long Tail Pro vs Ahrefs](https://rankbuddy.io/blog/long-tail-pro-vs-ahrefs) if you are replacing an older keyword tool.

## My verdict

**KWFinder is the better keyword tool for most small sites.** It is cheaper, easier to learn, better for local research and includes four other Mangools tools, API and MCP access in the same subscription.

**Ahrefs is the better SEO platform.** It has a much larger keyword database, full competitor keyword data, one of the strongest backlink indexes and a site audit. If you would use those, Lite is worth the extra cost. If you would only use Keywords Explorer, it usually is not.

My rule of thumb: if your question is "which keywords can my site rank for?", start with KWFinder. If your question is "why do my competitors rank and how do I catch up?", choose Ahrefs. And if your question is "what should my site work on this week?", start with your own Search Console data.

That is the difference between **keyword research** and **SEO execution**.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is KWFinder better than Ahrefs?

For pure keyword research on a small site, KWFinder is often the better choice: it is cheaper, easier to use and better for local research. Ahrefs is better if you also need full competitor keyword data, backlinks and site audits.

### How much does KWFinder cost compared with Ahrefs?

KWFinder is part of Mangools, which costs $61/month or $37.70/month billed annually for Basic (standard US prices; some countries see lower regional prices). Ahrefs Starter costs $29/month with 200 credits, and Lite costs $129/month or $107/month billed annually.

### Is KWFinder part of Ahrefs?

No. KWFinder is made by Mangools and is sold as part of the Mangools subscription together with SERPChecker, SERPWatcher, LinkMiner and SiteProfiler. Ahrefs' keyword tool is called Keywords Explorer.

### Which has more keywords, Ahrefs or KWFinder?

Ahrefs says Keywords Explorer has 28.7 billion keywords across 217 locations. Mangools says KWFinder has about 2.5 billion keywords, but supports around 65,000 locations, including cities, which makes it stronger for local research.

### Why is keyword difficulty different in Ahrefs and KWFinder?

They use different formulas. Ahrefs KD is based on how many referring domains link to the top 10 ranking pages. Mangools KD combines Domain Authority, Page Authority, Citation Flow and Trust Flow of the first-page results. A KD of 20 in one tool is not the same as 20 in the other.

### Does KWFinder have a free version?

Yes. A free Mangools account gives 5 keyword lookups per 24 hours with 15 related and 5 competitor keywords per lookup. Ahrefs Free covers Site Explorer and Site Audit for sites you verify, but does not include Keywords Explorer.

### Can KWFinder show competitor keywords?

Yes, with a search by domain. On Mangools Basic it returns 25 competitor keywords per lookup; Premium and Agency return up to 2,000. Ahrefs Site Explorer shows the full list of keywords a domain ranks for.

### Do Ahrefs and KWFinder work with ChatGPT or Claude?

Yes. Mangools includes API and MCP access on every paid plan. Ahrefs includes its MCP server on Lite and above, with 200,000 API units a month on Lite.
